We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sione Lauaki this morning. The formidable forward first debuted for the Chiefs in 2004, playing 70 games for us before departing New Zealand in 2010 to continue his career in France. In addition to his on-field heroics, Sione was a much loved and respected teammate. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sione’s family and friends and with the entire Chiefs whanau as today we have lost a brother. Rest in peace Sione, always a Chief.

The Gallagher Chiefs have finished their first day at the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens with a 26-14 victory over the Waratahs.
Returning to the Chiefs tens squad, Dwayne Sweeney opened the scoring with a surging run through the midfield.
A resolute Waratahs team fought back to 7-7, before Shaun Stevenson meticulously placed a crossfield kick into the arms of Lachlan Boshier who crashed over in the corner to head to halftime leading 12-7.
The Waratahs fought back with a try after the break, but it was the Chiefs who had the last say, scoring two beautifully executed tries after substantial pressure in the opposition 22. Taukei'aho surged over the line before Liam Messam crossed for his second try of the tournament.
Earlier in the day, the Gallagher Chiefs went down to the Melbourne Rebels 19-5 in the blazing Brisbane heat. Liam Messam managed to make history, scoring the first ever try of the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens tournament.
