Born and raised in Chiefs Country, Hoeata said he was excited to be returning to the club as a coach after options from other teams were on the cards.

“I feel really fortunate to be back at the Chiefs. It’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to come back to, so having this opportuntiy feels really special” Said Hoeata. He continued “It’s been great reconnecting with Jono and some of the players I’ve coached and played with over the years as well as building on the existing relationships – particular with the Taranaki boys. It’s making my job a lot more seamless coming in”

Hoeata also brings valuable provincial experience from his time with the Yarrows Taranaki Bulls, where he has served as Assistant Coach for the past six seasons. During that period, he played a key role in developing the forward pack, helping shape a resilient, high-work-rate team that won the 2023 Bunnings NPC title and consistently produced players ready to step into Super Rugby environments. His long association with Taranaki Rugby further strengthens the Chiefs pathway links and adds another layer of regional knowledge to the coaching group.

Hoeata completes the Gallagher Chiefs 2026 coaching team by joining Roger Randle, David Hill, Graham Dewes and Marty Bourke, the latter being recently nominated for Coach of the Year for his NPC season with Cantebury. The club can also confirm that Huw Beynon has been appointed Team Manager for the Gallagher Chiefs. Huw has spent several seasons with the Tasman Mako, and previously was General Manager of NZ National Baskeball League.
