Waikato Representative Daniel Sinkinson signs with Gallagher Chiefs

Sinkinson has turned his 2026 Wider Training Group opportunity into a full-time contract, taking the next step in his Super Rugby Pacific journey.

Previously representing for the Hurricanes, Sinkinson joined the Gallagher Chiefs on a Wider Training Group contract in 2026. Injuries within the main squad meant that Sinkinson was able to capitalise on his role and ran out in the Chiefs jersey five times during the season.

Sinkinson says his focus remained simple: show up each week, prepare the best he could and be ready when called upon.

“Getting called to the Wider Training Group for the Chiefs was a great opportunity. My mindset was to show up each week and prepare with the team as best I could. When I did get named, I wanted to make sure I was ready. Being part of the Wider Training Group means you have to be patient, but when the opportunities come you have to make the most of them”. This approach led Sinkinson to score 4 tries during his debut year with the Chiefs and ultimately led to an offer of a full time contract. Fans will be looking to 2027 and to the electric playing style that Sinkinson brings to Chiefs Country.

With Wider Training Group announcements happening next week, Sinkinson’s progression offers a timely reminder of where that first opportunity can lead in the Super Rugby environment.

What is a Wider Training Group?

A group of additional players who sit outside a club’s main 38 player Super Rugby Pacific squad but train inside the club environment, providing important depth during the season while supercharging their own development.

The WTG Draft gives the five New Zealand clubs a formal process to select those players after the NPC. This creates a visible pathway from provincial rugby into Super Rugby Pacific.
