Chiefs Rugby Club can today confirm loose forward Samipeni Finau will depart the Gallagher Chiefs to take up an opportunity with Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan.
Finau has been an influential member of the Gallagher Chiefs since making his Super Rugby debut against the Highlanders in 2021, becoming known across Chiefs Country for his physicality, versatility and powerful presence in the loose forwards.
Born in Tonga, Finau attended St Peter’s Cambridge, represented Waikato, and came through the Chiefs Under-20s pathway before establishing himself in the Gallagher Chiefs environment. His performances in the club jersey saw him earn higher honours in 2023, when he was named in the All Blacks squad becoming All Black #1211.

Finau made an immediate impact on the international stage, scoring on Test debut against Australia in Dunedin as the All Blacks came from behind to win 23-20. He has since gone on to represent the All Blacks 12 times.
Acknowledging his five years with the club Finau shared his respect for the jersey:
“My time at the Chiefs will always be one that I will cherish. It’s hard to say goodbye, but I’m really grateful for the people, the memories and the chance to represent this club. Wearing the jersey has been an honour and I hoped I have represented all this jersey stands for. Chiefs will always be home. Thank you ❤️”
Chiefs Rugby has several international departures following the 2026 season with Xavier Roe, Etene Nanai-Seturo, Lalakai Foketi, Liam Coombes-Fabling and Reuben O’Neill having also confirmed their movements overseas.
Each has made a valued contribution to the Gallagher Chiefs environment and with a combined 200 Chiefs caps fans will be keenly watching for who will step into the squad for 2027.
