Jono Gibbes is a respected rugby leader with deep roots in the Chiefs region and a wealth of international coaching experience.
A proud Waikato man, Gibbes captained Waikato and the Gallagher Chiefs where he earned a combined 132 appearances. Known for his leadership and physicality as a loose forward, he also captained the Māori All Blacks to a historic victory over the Britsh & Irish Lions in 2005. Gibbes is All Black #1038 having made 8 test appearances.
After retiring as a player in 2008, Gibbes quickly transitioned into coaching. He has since built a wealth of international experience that includes roles with Leinster, Clermont Auvergne, La Rochelle, and Ulster. In 2018, he took on the role of Head Coach for Waikato where he guided the team to a National Provincial Championship title. In 2023, he was appointed Head Coach for the New Zealand U20s before returning to the Gallagher Chiefs ahead of the 2024 season as a part of the coaching team.
In 2025, Gibbes was appointed Head Coach of the Gallagher Chiefs, bringing a strong connection to the region, proven leadership, and a forward-focused mindset. His appointment signals a commitment to continuity and long-term performance, building on the foundations laid in recent seasons.
